Reasons To Do A Science Project
- Teaches the student the scientific method
- Introduces the student to the thrill of scientific discovery
- Exposes the student to new opportunities for personal and intellectual growth
Why Participate?
Participation in science fairs offers students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from the completion of a research project. Students will be introduced to the thrill of scientific discovery and will be exposed to new opportunities for personal and intellectual growth. The science fair project integrates nearly all of the skills that a student learns in school into one activity. The student gains poise, confidence and learns valuable presentation skills by presenting their research to parents, peers, scientists, and judges. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with famous professionals in various scientific disciplines.

The WhizKids Foundation offers a science fair program in which WhizKids Instructors visit a school once every two weeks to teach students how to successfully create, execute and present a science fair project. During the first semester (typically September through December) students will take part in a 4-6 session "mock" science fair, in which every student will complete the same project. The mock science fair teaches students the entire scientific method from how to ask a question and choose a hypothesis to results and conclusions.
The second semester (typically January through May) consists of a 10 session framework for preparing and executing a science fair. WhizKids Instructors visit a school once every two weeks to teach and help guide students through every step of the science fair process. Students start by choosing their own projects (within reason) and they are taught how to create a hypothesis. Students then work independently on their projects for several weeks, gathering data and creating results and conclusions. WhizKids Instructors are on hand to check in, keep students focused and help with data at all times. WhizKids Instructors then teach students how to create the science fair board, and coach students in presentation for the actual fair. The semester ends with a real science fair held at the school. The science fair is typically a full school day in which students must present their projects to judges, teachers, and their peers. An evening component can be incorporated to allow parents to attend the fair and awards ceremony.
All supplies needed for individual student projects must be supplied by either the school or the student. However, all supplies needed for the science fair itself (including poster boards, etc.) will be supplied by the WhizKids Foundation. If the students already understand the concept of the scientific method, it is possible to initiate this program without including the mock science fair component.
